A Path to Permanence: Student to PR

Canada is one of the most sought-after destinations for immigration, thanks to its vibrant economy, high standard of living, and welcoming attitude towards newcomers. One of the key attractions of Canada’s immigration system is the numerous pathways available to permanent residency. It is important to explore some of the most popular study pathways to permanent residence in Canada.

Study Permit and PGWP

A study permit is a document that allows foreign nationals to study at a designated learning institution (DLI) in Canada. International students who hold a study permit can work part-time on-campus, and full-time during scheduled breaks, which can help them support themselves during their studies. Once they have completed their program, they can apply for a post-graduation work permit (PGWP) that allows them to work in Canada for up to three years.

Express Entry

Express Entry is a federal immigration system that manages the applications of skilled workers who want to become permanent residents of Canada. Express Entry is a points-based system that considers factors such as age, education, language proficiency, work experience, and other factors. International students who have completed a program at a Canadian DLI and have obtained skilled work experience in Canada may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through Express Entry. There are three pathways under Express entry and international students can resort to the following among them to proceed to permanent residence.

  • Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
  • Federal Skilled Worker Program

Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The Canadian Experience Class is a federal immigration program that allows individuals who have gained skilled work experience in Canada to apply for permanent residency. International students who have completed a program at a Canadian DLI, and who have obtained work experience in Canada, may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the CEC. To be eligible, applicants must have at least one year of skilled work experience in Canada and meet other requirements such as language proficiency.

The Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) program, which is run through the Express Entry immigration system, can be a possibility for some graduates of overseas students. FSW is a wonderful alternative for foreign student graduates who already have acquired competent job experience overseas since, unlike the Canadian Experience Class (CEC), it does not need a person to have Canadian work experience.

Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSW)

The FSW program is a points-based immigration program that employs the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score to rank applicants against one another automatically. Only those applicants with the most competitive profiles are invited to apply for permanent residency. FSW can be a fantastic route to becoming a permanent resident if an overseas student is extremely competitive inside the CRS score system and satisfies the qualifying standards.

The FSW program does demand that candidates show they have a minimum of twelve (12) months of full-time, uninterrupted, skilled job experience, accomplished in any country or an equivalent number of part-time hours. This program will not be an option for overseas students who have never worked.

Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Provincial Nominee Programs are immigration programs designed to meet the specific labour market needs of individual provinces and territories in Canada. PNPs often have specific streams that target international students who have graduated from a Canadian DLI, have obtained work experience in the province, and meet other requirements. The eligibility criteria and application process vary depending on the province or territory.

Immigrating to Quebec

Quebec has its own immigration system and offers unique pathways to permanent residency for international students. The Quebec government operates its own immigration programs, including the Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) and the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP).

The Quebec Experience Program (PEQ) is a fast-track immigration program that allows international students who have graduated from a Quebec educational institution to apply for permanent residency without requiring a job offer. To be eligible, applicants must have obtained a diploma or degree from a recognized Quebec educational institution, demonstrate advanced intermediate French language proficiency, and have obtained work experience in Quebec.

The Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSWP) is a points-based immigration program that considers various factors such as education, work experience, language proficiency, and other factors. International students who have completed a program at a Quebec educational institution and have obtained work experience in Quebec may be eligible to apply for permanent residency through the QSWP.

Start-Up Visa

The Start-Up Visa is a federal immigration program designed to encourage foreign entrepreneurs to start a business in Canada. International students who have graduated from a Canadian DLI and have a business idea that has been supported by a designated organization can apply for permanent residency through the Start-Up Visa program. The business must be innovative, have the potential for high growth, and create jobs for Canadians.
